Feeding Guide
When it comes to feeding kittens the right amount of food, you need to know their expected adult body weight. In most cases, all we have to go on is the weight of the mother but remember that, in general, a male kitten will be around 30% heavier than its female littermate at maturity. So, if the mother weighs around 3.5kg, then that’s a good estimate for the female kitten’s final weight, but the tom could be a whole kilo heavier at around 4.5kg.
Kittens require protein, among other specific nutrients, in their diet to support healthy development and high-energy levels. That’s why choosing food made for kittens, opposed to adult cats, is important.
Kittens are ready for dry food when their teeth have grown in, at about five weeks old. Most kittens should be fully weaned by the time you pick them up, but if you are raising kittens from birth, you should check with a vet if you’re not sure about the best time to wean your kitten.
